3 Underrated Winter Activities in PEC

Updated: Jan 23

Everyone talks about PEC in summer. Beaches, wineries, food tours, all that. But winter? People sleep on it. Which is actually great because it means fewer crowds and that quiet, cozy vibe that makes you want to stay an extra day.

Here are underrated things to do in Prince Edward County during winter that most people don't think about but totally should.

  1. Skating

Have you heard skating in the County? You should! When the weather cooperates, you can skate outdoors at Sophiasburgh Town Hall. If you’re up for a short drive, Belleville’s Victoria Harbour is a popular outdoor skating spot when the ice is safe.

Want to explore a little farther? Victoria Harbour in Belleville is a great outdoor skating spot when the ice is safe and The Batawa Lion’s Club maintains outdoor rinks too.

And when in doubt, go indoors! Both the Picton (PECC) and Wellington (WDCC) arenas offer free public skating on select days. No worrying about ice conditions, no juggling weather apps, just lace up and glide.

  1. Snowshoeing

Snowshoeing is one of the easiest winter activities for families. Just call ahead before you go, snow conditions can change fast and choose shorter trails if you have younger kids. Before you head out, call ahead to make sure snow conditions are good. And remember to keep your kids’ ages and energy levels in mind - shorter trails can be plenty of fun.

Sugarbush Vineyards has about 2.5 km of snowshoe trails through the vineyard and maple forest on Fridays to Sundays. Snowshoe rentals are $36 per person, including poles, and they have youth sizes for kids 8+. Your rental also includes a wine tasting and hot chocolate, and you can buy cheese plates or chips and salsa on-site.

Other good snowshoeing spots include:

📍Sandbanks Provincial Park (the Dunes are extra fun!)

📍Millennium Trail

📍Macaulay Mountain Conservation Area

📍Delhi Park

  1. Sledding

Few things make kids happier than a good sledding hill and PEC has some great ones. This park has a range of hills, from small gentle slopes to fast runs that will thrill older kids. Bring your sled, magic carpet, or snowboard. You’ll definitely feel the burn climbing back up.

Macaulay Mountain Conservation Area has some great hills too. From the Birdhouse City parking lot, head straight and a little right to reach the big sledding hill. The tiny snowbank near the parking lot is perfect for toddlers who just want a small slide.

Depending on the snow, the Dunes can turn into giant sledding hills. It’s a wild, fun spot - just check conditions before you go.

Bonus: A Winter Beach Walk

Snowy sand dunes with patches of grass under a cloudy sky. Trees line the horizon, creating a serene and wintry landscape.

Sandbanks in winter looks nothing like summer and that’s what makes it incredible. Some years, ice and snow build up in shapes that look almost like glaciers. A simple walk along the shoreline feels fresh and calming.

Just bundle up, and don’t forget a thermos of tea or hot chocolate. The wind can be surprisingly strong out there.

Winter in PEC is peaceful, playful, and full of moments your family will talk about long after the season ends. Whether you’re skating at the rink, snowshoeing through a vineyard, or taking in a frosty Sandbanks sunrise. There’s always something new to try!
