Local side-by-side (SxS) and all-terrain vehicle (ATV) riders have turned a day on the trails into meaningful community support, donating $3,160 to the Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital Foundation (PECMHF) to support the Back the Build campaign.

The funds were raised during an inaugural poker run held June 3, which saw 120 participants riding 57 machines along the scenic Millennium Trail. Riders enjoyed the outdoors while contributing to the future of healthcare in Prince Edward County. In addition to the hospital donation, $1,377 was also raised and contributed to the municipality for maintenance of the Millennium Trail.

The event began at the Prince Edward Community Centre in Picton, with riders travelling west to Carrying Place before returning along the trail. Participants paid $40 to take part, collecting playing cards at designated stops along the route for a chance to build the winning poker hand.

Community Fun with Lasting Impact

“On behalf of the Foundation and the Campaign Cabinet, thank you to everyone who took part in this first-ever poker run,” said Nancy Parks, chair of the Back the Build campaign. “Your involvement brings us closer to making the new County hospital a reality. Events like this show how community groups can transform a fun activity into real impact.”

Event organizer Rick Insley, speaking on behalf of the Prince Edward SxS/ATV Riders, said the idea came from the region’s rural character and love of outdoor recreation.

“With the Millennium Trail stretching more than 40 kilometres, it was the perfect setting for an ATV poker run,” Insley said. “It gave riders a chance to enjoy the beauty of the County while supporting an important cause. We’re grateful to everyone who joined us, shared the day with friends, and helped raise funds for both the hospital build and the upkeep of the trail.”

A cheque presentation took place at the Millennium Trail entrance off Lake Street in Picton, attended by representatives from the riders’ group, the hospital foundation, the municipality, and the Back the Build campaign.
