Prince Edward County is preparing for an influx of visitors during the total solar eclipse on April 8, with officials planning to manage the day much like a busy summer weekend, despite it falling during the tourism off-season.

While the County will not host an official eclipse viewing event, Fire Chief Chad Brown told council that the municipality is taking proactive steps due to its location within the path of totality, which is expected to draw visitors. Emergency planning efforts are focused on managing traffic, crowd safety, and service availability, especially as some seasonal amenities are not yet open.

Mayor Steve Ferguson said the County’s plans are well developed, noting that weather remains the only unknown.

Municipal staff will be deployed to support higher-than-normal attendance at public properties, with additional portable washrooms, extended access to certain facilities, and enhanced waste collection. Electronic road signs are being rented, and parking and traffic enforcement will be increased in high-traffic areas including Picton, Bloomfield, Wellington, and popular scenic locations.

Several agencies including OPP, public health, paramedics, conservation authorities, and school boards have been involved in planning for months. Local school boards have also moved a PA Day to April 8 to reduce safety risks related to student transportation during peak eclipse timing.

Provincial parks such as Sandbanks and North Beach will remain unsupervised and officially closed, though gates will remain open as they have throughout the winter. Conservation areas will not host events.

Officials emphasized that preparedness efforts are designed to ensure the County can respond quickly and safely, regardless of how many visitors arrive for the rare astronomical event.
