Prince Edward County council has approved an amendment to its agreement with the province, extending the timeline for the rehabilitation of County Road 49.

The updated deal applies to nearly $20 million in provincial funding and allows the project completion deadline to move from March 31, 2028, to Dec. 31, 2028. The agreement’s expiry has also been pushed to the end of 2029, giving the County an additional construction season.

Originally, most construction contracts had to be awarded by Sept. 30, 2026, leaving only one full season to complete the work. The extension provides more flexibility as the municipality continues searching for additional funding.

So far, the project has secured $19.9 million from the province and $7.8 million from the County, but a $24.5 million shortfall remains. The total cost is estimated at $52.3 million, including upgrades to Picton Main Street and a required 25 per cent contingency.

The provincial funding, announced in 2025, supports infrastructure tied to future housing growth, with more than 2,000 units planned on Picton’s east side.

Federal funding remains uncertain. Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon recently indicated there are no current programs available for the project, though future opportunities such as the Trade Diversification Corridors Fund, may be an option. A proposed grain terminal in Picton could strengthen a future application.

Meanwhile, County Road 49 continues to deteriorate. The 18.4-kilometre route, opened in 1966, shows significant wear, with repairs costing more than $70,000 annually. It remains one of Ontario’s worst roads, according to the CAA.
