Do I Need to Charge HST? A Practical Guide for Small and Seasonal STA Owners

If you run a short term accommodation in the County, you have probably asked yourself this question at least once. Do I actually need to charge HST, or does it only apply to larger operators?


It is a common source of confusion, especially for small or seasonal owners who rent only part of the year. The good news is that the rules are clear once you understand the basics,

and staying onside is often easier than people expect.


HST applies to most short term rentals in Ontario, including cottages, secondary suites, and whole home rentals offered for stays of less than 30 consecutive days. In the County, that means charging 13 percent HST when required. The key phrase is when required, because not every owner needs to register right away.
