Ernie Margetson (Unofficially) Wins Election for Prince Edward County Mayor
Congratulations to Ernie Margetson, projected to be Prince Edward County’s next mayor!

Before I arrived for our coffee chat, Ernie had been planting oak trees. We sat on his porch overlooking Consecon Lake, where our conversation occasionally made room for passing birds and a chipmunk with (non-political) priorities of its own.
Those moments stayed with me because they helped explain something that ran through our discussion: his sense of responsibility for a place that will outlast any of us.
Ernie's new role as Mayor of Prince Edward County will give him the opportunity to help write his part in a chapter of our story, alongside council, and we look forward to seeing how the next four years unfold.
What priorities does Ernie Margetson bring to the role for Mayor?
He spoke about managing growth alongside housing, employment, and infrastructure; considering environmental opportunities when municipal spending is already happening; and preparing for future financial obligations. He also emphasized establishing respectful working relationships across council from the beginning.
“We can be a better, stronger place. We can all work together. Everyone. And put the divisions behind us.”
— Ernie Margetson, Mayor-Elect of Prince Edward County

His interest in the County’s future felt closely connected to his appreciation of its natural spaces, heritage, and the lives already built here. The question running through our chat was what we each leave for the people who come after us.
Those intentions offer a starting point for understanding his approach, rather than a guarantee of particular outcomes. Moving them forward will involve council, municipal staff, resources, and public participation (that includes you, me, and us!). There will be decisions to explain and room for residents to question them.
A Thank You to Brad & Terry
To Terry Shortt and Brad Nieman: thank you for running, sharing your ideas, and giving residents a choice. The commitment involved deserves recognition beyond tonight’s result.
Brad, we hope your enthusiasm for recreation continues to create opportunities for people to meet, participate, and feel less alone. It’s approaches for this interconnection that makes kilometers feel like just next door in the County.
Terry, we hope you’ll keep contributing your practical perspective on County matters, including how infrastructure needs are assessed and addressed. In one way or another, I hope you bring back the bus!
Those contributions remain valuable wherever they happen in our community.
Congratulations, Ernie!
(Unofficially) Congratulations, Ernie. We look forward to continuing the conversation!
