Date: October 18, 2023

Community members are invited to attend a free, drop-in fraud prevention event on Monday, October 23, aimed at helping seniors recognize and avoid scams. The session will take place at the Giant Tiger parking lot on Main Street in Picton.
Running from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., the event will feature representatives from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and TD Bank, who will share practical advice, warning signs, and strategies to help residents protect themselves from targeted fraud schemes.
Mark Rose, Manager of the Picton Business Improvement Association, emphasized the importance of education in preventing fraud, noting that scams targeting seniors are becoming increasingly common. He added that local businesses regularly intervene to stop potential scam attempts, underscoring the need for ongoing awareness within the community.
“We have a responsibility to ensure residents and businesses alike have the information they need to recognize scams before harm is done,” Rose said.
Aaron Miller, Community Safety and Media Officer with Prince Edward OPP, described fraud as a growing concern, pointing out that reported cases remain alarmingly high. He noted that fraud tactics continue to evolve, making education critical for residents of all ages.
Jennifer Thompson, Store Manager at Picton’s Giant Tiger, said the store is proud to host the initiative, highlighting the business’s commitment to supporting community safety and well-being.
While the event is geared toward seniors, business owners and residents of all ages are encouraged to stop by and learn how to recognize common scams and protect themselves and others.
