A powerful snowstorm swept across Prince Edward County on Tuesday, bringing significant snowfall, hazardous road conditions, and widespread disruptions to local services.

Environment Canada had issued a snow squall warning ahead of the storm, forecasting between 10 and 20 centimetres of snow. However, many areas reported even higher accumulations by late afternoon as strong winds created blowing snow and near-whiteout conditions.

The municipality declared a significant weather event, warning residents that snow clearing operations could take longer than usual. As a result, Tuesday night’s council meeting was postponed to Thursday.

The storm also impacted waste services. Recycling collection was cancelled in parts of Hallowell ward, including Ways Landing Road and Benham Place Road, with pickup rescheduled for the following day.

Throughout the day, roads and sidewalks became increasingly difficult to navigate. Numerous vehicles were reported stranded or forced off the road due to poor visibility and drifting snow.

Conditions worsened along Highway 401, where a series of collisions involving roughly 50 vehicles led to a full closure between Belleville and Brighton. Emergency crews transported stranded motorists to a warming centre in Trenton while the situation was addressed.

Municipal officials reminded residents that while snow clearing continues during significant weather events, service levels may not meet normal standards until conditions improve.

Snow removal operations were scheduled overnight in Picton, with residents asked to avoid on-street parking to allow crews to work efficiently.

The storm followed an already snowy season, with multiple weather events since December. Strong winds, reaching up to 70 km/h, and frigid temperatures added to the challenges, with wind chills dipping as low as -26 overnight.

Snow squalls were expected to continue into Wednesday, with additional accumulation possible.
