Man Charged After Lottery Scam Targets Vulnerable Resident in Prince Edward County
Prince Edward County OPP have laid charges following an investigation into a suspected lottery scam involving a local senior.
Police say the investigation began on Jan. 27 after receiving a report that an elderly resident may have been misled into believing they had won a lottery prize.

As a result, a 56-year-old man from Sutton West, Ontario has been charged with fraud over $5,000. Additional charges include two counts of possession of a weapon, driving without a licence, and failing to provide proof of insurance.
The accused has been released from custody and is scheduled to appear in Ontario Court of Justice in Prince Edward County on March 12.
Police are using the case to remind the public that legitimate lottery winnings never require upfront payments. Scammers often exploit this misconception to target vulnerable individuals.
“Fraudsters frequently target vulnerable individuals,” said Community Safety Officer Nicole Cordingley, encouraging residents to share fraud awareness information with friends and family who may be at risk.
Anyone who believes they have been a victim of fraud is urged to contact police at 1-888-310-1122. Additional resources are available through the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
