OPP Warns of Rising Contractor Scams Targeting Homeowners

Police say they have received multiple complaints from homeowners who paid deposits for work such as renovations, landscaping, and driveway paving, only to have contractors fail to complete the job or disappear altogether.
Authorities are reminding the public that taking a few precautionary steps before hiring can help prevent financial loss.
Tips to Stay Protected
Homeowners are encouraged to thoroughly vet contractors before agreeing to any work. This includes confirming the company has a legitimate business presence, checking reviews, and speaking directly with past clients.
Police also advise against paying large sums upfront. Established contractors typically request reasonable deposits rather than full payment before work begins. Getting a detailed written contract outlining timelines, costs, and responsibilities is also essential.
Residents should be cautious of high-pressure sales tactics, unsolicited door-to-door offers, and anyone unwilling to provide proof of licensing, insurance, or credentials.
Warning Signs of a Scam
The OPP highlights several red flags, including demands for large cash payments, lack of proper documentation, and contractors who cannot provide references or verifiable contact information. Offers that seem unusually cheap should also raise concern.
Reporting Fraud
Anyone who believes they have been targeted or defrauded is encouraged to contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122. Anonymous tips can also be submitted through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
