Vehicle Safety Issues Uncovered During Joint OPP and MTO Inspections
Date: February 07, 2023
A coordinated enforcement initiative involving the Prince Edward County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), the Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO), and municipal bylaw officers has identified multiple safety violations during recent inspections of commercial passenger and motor vehicles.

During the operation, seven commercial vehicles were pre-selected for inspection, while three additional vehicles were stopped on the road and redirected to the inspection site. Authorities reported discovering serious mechanical and safety deficiencies, including malfunctioning braking systems, suspension defects, and a commercial vehicle operating with a flat tire.
As a result of the findings, charges were issued for operating and permitting unsafe vehicles. Police emphasized that these conditions pose significant risks to both passengers and other road users.
Officials confirmed that vehicle inspection initiatives will continue throughout the year as part of an ongoing effort to improve road safety and regulatory compliance.
A similar enforcement action conducted last month resulted in inspections of 11 vehicles, where officers identified severely rusted frames, non-operational seatbelts, altered or missing exhaust systems, and brake failures. That operation also led to charges for driving while under suspension and additional violations related to unsafe vehicle operation.
Authorities warned that drivers who fail to attend scheduled inspections could face fines, enforcement action, and the possible removal of licence plates by the MTO.
