The meeting opened with quorum confirmed and routine approvals of the agenda and previous minutes. One of the first major actions was the election of committee leadership. A new chair and vice chair were appointed, allowing the committee to formally move into its work for the year.
The committee also welcomed a new environmental intern, who will support climate planning, data analysis, and coordination across municipal programs. Members introduced themselves, highlighting a wide range of backgrounds in planning, conservation, community groups, and environmental policy.

The main focus of the meeting was progress on the Climate Action Plan, specifically the upcoming public consultation phase. Staff and committee members explained that the County is now working on milestone three of the national climate program, which moves from data collection and target setting into action planning.
The consultation approach was described as collaborative and inclusive, with a strong effort to involve youth, farmers, and community organizations. Four in-person consultation sessions are planned across different communities, supported by presentations, information tables, and opportunities for written feedback. An online option will also remain open after the events.
The goal of consultation is to refine climate strategies, gather local ideas, and ensure residents understand what the County is trying to achieve and why.
Planning File Review at Base31

The committee reviewed a planning submission for a new apartment building at Base31. While the proposal raised few environmental concerns, members emphasized the need for developers to move beyond promises and actually deliver green building features.
Issues such as energy efficiency, geothermal potential, and waste management were discussed. The committee endorsed the planning working group’s submission while flagging areas where stronger environmental commitments could still be encouraged.
Annual Report to Council
The committee approved its annual report to Council, to be presented later in February. Members discussed strengthening the report by clearly addressing misinformation around climate planning, explaining funding realities, and reinforcing that the County’s approach is local, practical, and evidence-based.
Work Plan Changes and New Priorities
The meeting ended with a significant update to the committee’s work plan, adding three new priorities. These include renewed attention to shoreline protection, advancing green design guidelines, and exploring active and school-based transportation. These additions signal a shift toward more proactive, community-facing environmental work in 2025.
