Prince Edward County OPP are highlighting the actions of a Picton retail employee after a local resident was targeted in a sophisticated bank fraud scam that resulted in a $17,000 loss.

Acting Sgt. Aaron Miller said police received a report last week from an individual who had been contacted by someone claiming to be from their bank’s fraud department. The caller instructed the victim to deposit money into a local cryptocurrency ATM, convincing them the transaction was necessary to protect their funds.

After the initial loss, the scammer continued to pressure the victim to purchase gift cards. When the individual went to a Rexall store in Picton to buy the cards, a store employee recognized the warning signs of a scam and intervened. The employee successfully prevented any further purchases and advised the individual to contact police.

OPP say the quick thinking and vigilance of retail staff played a key role in stopping additional financial losses and are thanking the employee for taking action.

Police are reminding the public that fraudsters are highly persuasive and often prepared with convincing explanations to gain trust. Residents are encouraged to protect themselves by refusing suspicious requests, taking time to verify information, and never sharing personal or financial details with unknown callers.

OPP also advise people to ask for proper identification, confirm who they are dealing with independently, and remember that requests involving urgent payments, cryptocurrency, or gift cards are common red flags.

Fraudsters often target vulnerable individuals, and police urge residents to share this information with family members, friends, and others who may be at higher risk.

More information about common scams and how to prevent fraud is available through the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
