Preschool Runners Lace Up to Support Children’s Treatment Centre
Date: July 20, 2023
A group of determined four-year-olds proved that big hearts can come in small packages during a 1-kilometre fun run held in Bloomfield, raising funds for the Children’s Treatment Centre (CTC) at Belleville General Hospital.

Nine young participants took part in the event, cheered on by family members and friends. After completing the run or walk each child was awarded a medal in recognition of their effort. The runners included Elon Pechenick, Thomas Barber, Hudson Rose, Daisy Farrell, Abby Butters, Mimosa Seale, Joni Wyatt, Emma Normandin, and Ella Zalev.
The fundraiser was organized by Jennifer Gagné, whose family has personally benefited from services provided by the Children’s Treatment Centre.
“Our youngest son, Koen, has gained so much through therapy at the CTC,” said Gagné. “And when we saw how much our older son Elon loves running, it sparked the idea of creating a fun, kid-friendly event that could give back.”
Using a CanadaHelps fundraising page, Gagné initially set a modest goal—but support from family, friends, and the community quickly surpassed expectations. The event ultimately raised $4,089 for the Children’s Treatment Centre.
Gagné said she was overwhelmed by the generosity shown, noting additional donated contributions such as graphic design assistance, custom shirts, and medals for the young runners.
Deborah Milligan, manager of the Children’s Treatment Centre, praised the initiative. “The event was truly amazing,” she said. “We are incredibly grateful for this level of support.”
Based at Belleville General Hospital, the CTC serves more than 3,000 children and families across Hastings and Prince Edward counties, offering rehabilitation and therapy services from birth through school age for children with physical, neurological, or developmental challenges.
Several families involved in the fun run later attended a small ceremony to formally present the donation and learn more about the centre’s work.
Representing the Belleville General Hospital Foundation, Jennifer McTavish, Community Events Officer, commended the initiative. “This event shows how powerful one family’s experience can be,” she said. “Their inspiration led to an incredible outpouring of community support.”
