Province Boosts Funding to Protect County Firefighters from Cancer Risks

Prince Edward County firefighters are receiving additional support in reducing cancer risks on the job, thanks to new provincial funding announced this week.
The Ontario government has awarded the municipality $164,450 through its fire protection grant program, aimed at improving firefighter health and safety. Local officials, along with Bay of Quinte MPP Tyler Allsopp and representatives from the Office of the Fire Marshal, gathered to mark the investment.
Mayor Steve Ferguson emphasized the importance of equipping firefighters with the tools they need to stay safe while serving the community.
The funding will be used to expand the County’s cancer prevention efforts, including the purchase of a second decontamination machine designed to remove harmful substances from firefighting gear. The new unit will be installed at the Consecon fire station, helping speed up cleaning times.
Additional upgrades include new hose washing equipment, improved respiratory protection, and extra protective gear so firefighters can return to service more quickly after emergencies.
Interim Fire Chief Tim Kraemer noted that firefighting has recently been classified by the World Health Organization as a high-risk occupation for cancer, underscoring the need for cleaner equipment and better protective measures.
This latest funding builds on last year’s grant of more than $82,000, which helped install a similar decontamination system in Picton and purchase advanced respirators.
MPP Allsopp said the investment ensures firefighters have access to modern safety equipment and technology to better protect their health on the job.
