Scam Text About Parking Fines Raises Alarm in Prince Edward County

Scam texts have become more common in recent years, especially ones that look like official notices about fines, deliveries or government services. Many of them look legit to look at which is why they can be easy to believe.

A hand taps a glowing screen in the dark, finger against a light-blue background, creating a focused and intimate mood.

A text claiming you owe a parking fine can feel easy to ignore until it threatens your license and tells you to pay right now. That is exactly why residents in the County reacted so strongly to this warning. The issue is not just whether the message is fake but how quickly a convincing scam can create panic and push someone into clicking before they stop to question it.

In the County, this issue has been getting attention about a text that claims the recipient has an unpaid parking ticket and must pay immediately or risk consequences tied to their license. Based on the comments from the community, a lot of people had seen the same message and several said it looked real enough to make them pause and hesitate.

That concern is valid. Ontario has an official warning about an ongoing unpaid parking fines scam, and the province’s tickets and fines page also warns the public about unofficial sites asking for payment and personal information. The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre explains that scams like this often rely on urgency, fear, and links sent by text to get people to act quickly without checking.

The community comments show how effective this tactic can be. Some people said they deleted it right away. Others admitted it looked legitimate at first. A few pointed out that parking tickets are normally handled through official channels, not through a text demanding immediate payment. That lines up with public guidance. Prince Edward County’s own parking ticket page explains payment and dispute options through official systems, while the City of Toronto states clearly that parking violation notices are never issued by text message. Hamilton has also issued a text scam alert warning about messages that impersonate Ontario courts or ServiceOntario.

Some people went further and said the government would never text anyone about something like this. That is not fully accurate. Ontario does send some legitimate ServiceOntario renewal reminders if people sign up for them. But those messages do not demand immediate payment through a random link. That difference is what matters.

So what should you actually do if a message like this lands on your phone?

  • Start by slowing down. Urgency is the whole point of the scam. If a message pressures you to act immediately, that alone is a red flag.

  • Do not click the link. Instead, go directly to an official website you trust, like your municipality or the province, and check for any real notices there.

  • Look at the message closely. Generic language, unusual links, and threats tied to your license or legal status are common warning signs.

  • If you are unsure, ask. Many people in the thread only realized it was a scam after seeing others confirm they got the same text.

  • And if it does look suspicious, report it. You can contact local police or submit a report through the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.

For local residents, the takeaway is not just “delete the text.” It is to understand why it works. If many people in one community received the same text and had to stop and think about it, it shows how convincing these scams can be and how important it is to stay careful and informed.

Have you or someone you know received this same parking-ticket text?
