Blasting Work to Resume on Millennium Trail in Wellington This September

Date: Sep 04, 2025
Drilling and blasting activities are set to restart on the Millennium Trail in Wellington beginning Sept. 8, as crews continue work on the community’s major water and wastewater infrastructure upgrade.
The work will take place Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. and is required to allow contractors to break through bedrock so new watermain and sanitary sewer pipes can be installed at the necessary depth.
Operations will be concentrated on the closed portion of the trail between Belleville Street and Consecon Street. Prior to each blast, three extended siren blasts will be sounded to alert nearby residents and trail users.
Municipal officials estimate drilling and blasting will continue for approximately 45 business days. Should the work extend beyond that timeframe, the municipality says further updates will be provided to the public.
The blasting is part of the broader Wellington trunk watermain and sanitary sewer project, a major infrastructure initiative designed to support both current residents and future growth in the urban serviced area.
Once completed, the new trunk watermain will improve water distribution and storage capacity, while the upgraded sanitary sewer system will handle increased wastewater volumes from planned developments.
Construction of the new infrastructure begins near the existing water and wastewater treatment plants, extending east along Wellington Main Street, north on Cleminson Street, and east along the Millennium Trail before connecting to the new water tower on Belleville Street.
The project also includes the installation of a new sanitary pumping station on the Millennium Trail near West Street, which will play a key role in the upgraded sewer system.
The municipality anticipates most construction will be finished by late 2025, with final trail restoration scheduled for spring 2026.
