Prince Edward County Council has approved a zoning bylaw amendment that that allows a seasonal event venue to operate at Cherryvale Farm in Cherry Valley, clearing the way for weddings and other private functions at the site.

Clear chairs arranged on grass, surrounded by white floral decorations. Wooden tables are in the background, suggesting an elegant outdoor event.

The decision was made at a recent Planning and Development Committee meeting, where the application from property owner David Raistrick received approval following the County’s two-step planning process. Council raised no questions during deliberations, and the application moved forward as recommended by planning staff.

What the Approval Allows

The zoning amendment permits the use of a banquet or meeting centre in the form of a seasonal tent at the property located on County Road 10 in Athol ward. Approved uses include weddings, entertainment events, as well as cultural and educational gatherings.

The proposal first came before council in September as part of an initial overview meeting intended for information-sharing only. The statutory public meeting held this week marked the final step, where council considered public input before making its decision.

Mixed Views from the Community

Two residents addressed council during the public meeting, offering differing perspectives on the proposal.

One nearby resident spoke in support of the venue, describing the property owners as thoughtful neighbours who have taken steps to minimize impacts. She noted that the placement of the event tent, combined with existing trees, natural landscaping, and buildings on the site, helps reduce sound and visual effects. She also said traffic increases have not been noticeable during past events.

Another resident expressed concerns about the growing number of outdoor event venues in Cherry Valley, particularly the potential for amplified noise and late-night disruptions. He noted that his home sits between two event locations and warned that approving another outdoor space could significantly increase noise exposure. Safety concerns related to evening traffic were also raised.

Site Context and Next Steps

The Cherryvale Farm property spans nearly 51 hectares and has significant frontage along County Road 10. While a tent structure has been used on the site in past years, larger events were previously held without full planning approval, prompting the need for a formal zoning amendment.

With council’s approval now in place, the venue can operate in compliance with municipal planning rules. All documentation related to the application remains available through the County’s online planning portal.
