County Moves to Build Friendship With Ukrainian Community

Prince Edward County has voted to begin the process of forming an official municipal friendship with the Krasyliv Territorial Community in Ukraine, signaling continued support and solidarity with the Ukrainian people.
Council chose a friendship agreement rather than a formal twinning arrangement, allowing for a less structured, low-cost relationship focused on cooperation, understanding, and mutual support. The agreement would typically operate on a four-year term, with the option to evolve into a more formal partnership in the future.
The motion, brought forward by Councillor Bill Roberts and Mayor Steve Ferguson, emphasizes recognition of the sacrifice and resilience of Ukrainians, both during the ongoing conflict and in the rebuilding that will follow. Mayor Ferguson will reach out to elected officials in Krasyliv to begin discussions on how the two communities may collaborate.
Any translation or interpretation services required during the process are expected to cost between $1,000 and $1,500, with future expenses dependent on the scope of the agreement. Krasyliv, a municipality of nearly 30,000 residents across one town and surrounding villages has been significantly affected by the war and is currently hosting thousands of displaced residents.
The relationship builds on existing ties, as representatives from Krasyliv were part of a Ukrainian delegation that visited Prince Edward County in 2019 during municipal reform exchanges. Council also acknowledged the County’s previous humanitarian support efforts, including donations, fundraising events, and symbolic gestures of solidarity.
Municipal staff will also work toward developing a formal friendship policy to guide future international relationships.
