With Earth Day highlighting the importance of outdoor spaces and environmental stewardship, the Prince Edward County Trails Committee is encouraging the community to take part in a long-awaited celebration recognizing the transformation of the Millennium Trail.

Plans to improve the former rail corridor were first unveiled in early 2017, outlining upgrades to approximately 46 kilometres of trail intended to serve as both a linear park and a natural habitat supporting native plants, trees, and wildlife. Since then, the trail has evolved into a popular multi-use route enjoyed year-round by walkers, cyclists, hikers, cross-country skiers, snowmobilers, and ATV riders.

Now stretching roughly 53 kilometres, the Millennium Trail follows a decommissioned Canadian National Railway line purchased by Prince Edward County in 1997. The route begins near Fort Kente Road at Carrying Place, runs alongside much of the Loyalist Parkway, crosses Consecon Lake, passes through wetland areas near Hillier, and travels close to the communities of Wellington and Bloomfield. The trail concludes at two locations in Picton: one near Lake Street by the LCBO and another north of town near Highway 49 and White Chapel Road.

After years of planning, construction, and community involvement, the Trails Committee says it’s time to pause and acknowledge the collective effort behind the project.

“This journey has included many challenges and milestones,” the committee notes in its invitation. “While there is still work ahead, the progress made so far is worth celebrating.”

The success of the Millennium Trail is credited to hundreds of residents and supporters who contributed as volunteers, donors, ambassadors, and advocates throughout the process.

To show appreciation, the PEC Trails Committee is hosting a celebration on Thursday, May 2, at the Wellington District Community Centre. Weather permitting, participants are invited to join an informal bike ride or walk starting at 3 p.m. from the Belleville Street trail crossing and heading east.

The group will return to the community centre around 4:30 p.m. for light refreshments, followed by presentations beginning at 5 p.m. in the Highline Hall. Committee members and special guests will share reflections on the trail’s history, highlight accomplishments, and outline what’s still to come.
