Residents and businesses in Prince Edward County are being cautioned about fraudulent phone calls from individuals posing as fire inspectors.

Hand dialing a gray office phone with black buttons. Coiled cord in foreground. Bright, well-lit setting.

According to the Prince Edward County OPP, the scam involves callers claiming they must conduct a fire safety inspection of items such as smoke alarms and other equipment. In some cases, victims are asked to send photos of their devices, followed by a fake violation notice or fine. Payments have reportedly been requested using cryptocurrency or other unusual methods.

OPP say the scam may target both homeowners and business operators. Officials stress that these calls are not legitimate.

Prince Edward County Fire & Rescue also reminded the public that fire officials will never request payment by gift cards or cryptocurrency. When inspections are required, firefighters or inspectors will attend in person, arrive in marked vehicles, and carry official identification.

Anyone who receives a suspicious call is encouraged to hang up and report the incident to police.
