Fire crews from Prince Edward County Fire & Rescue responded to a structure fire on Inkerman Avenue in Picton just before 8 p.m. on Wednesday, February 21, marking the second residential fire in the community in as many nights.

The occupants were inside the home at the time and were alerted to the fire by a neighbour who noticed flames on the exterior. The blaze quickly intensified due to strong winds, fully engulfing the two-storey house and causing damage to a neighbouring property. Firefighters brought the fire under control, but extensive damage occurred throughout the home. No injuries were reported, and losses are estimated at approximately $300,000.

Fire Chief Chad Brown confirmed that updated information suggests working smoke alarms may have been present in at least one of the affected properties. He emphasized the ongoing importance of ensuring all homes are equipped with functional smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.

In response to the fire, a GoFundMe campaign has been created to support Erin and AJ Johnston, their infant daughter, and their family dog, all of whom escaped safely. While no one was hurt, the family lost nearly all of their belongings, including items prepared for an expected new baby later this year.

As of February 23, the fundraiser had received strong community support, raising over $26,000 through more than 160 donations. The family is currently staying with relatives in Kingston, while plans for recovery continue.
