Teen Hero Receives Civic Honour After Rescuing Family from House Fire

A standing ovation filled council chambers as a 14-year-old Wellington youth was formally recognized for his quick thinking and bravery in saving his family during a devastating house fire last spring.
At a recent council meeting, Ahmed Mustafa received a civic recognition award for his actions during a May 2023 fire that destroyed his family’s home. After spotting the flames from an upstairs window, Ahmed immediately alerted his parents and helped ensure his sister and baby brother escaped safely. His actions also allowed his parents to assist another child who uses a wheelchair, ensuring the entire family made it out alive.
Mayor Steve Ferguson praised the teen not only for his courage in the moment, but for the character and resilience he has shown throughout his life, calling him an inspiration to the entire community.
The fire marked yet another major loss for the family, who previously fled war-torn Syria, spent years as refugees, and eventually resettled in Prince Edward County with support from local volunteers. Despite repeated setbacks, the family has continued to rebuild with help from the community, which once again rallied to raise more than $70,000 to replace essential medical equipment, furniture, and a modified vehicle.
Ahmed’s parents are well known locally through their food business, Papa Ghanoush and Momma Hummus, whose products are sold throughout the region.
Council members and residents applauded not only a moment of heroism, but a story of perseverance, community support, and hope.
